A Prayer I Woke Up With

Sometime in the middle of the night last week, I woke up with a simple prayer already forming in my heart. It came out of my study of Ephesians 4:23. It came quietly, almost as though the Lord had placed it there while I slept.

Three short sentences:

Fill my mind with Your thoughts.

Fill my mouth with Your words.

Fill my heart with Your love.

Since that night, I’ve prayed these words every day. The more I’ve reflected on them, the more I’ve realized they summarize what it means to live a life surrendered to Christ.

Fill My Mind with Your Thoughts

Our minds are constantly being filled with something—news, opinions, distractions, worries, and our own assumptions. Scripture calls us to something better: to allow God to reshape the way we think.

Paul writes: “You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.” (Philippians 2:5, NLT)

He also reminds us: “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.” (Romans 12:2, NLT)

This first line of the prayer is not asking God simply to give me better ideas. It is asking Him to replace my way of thinking with His—to cultivate the mind of Christ within me.

Fill My Mouth with Your Words

Words have tremendous power. They can heal or wound, encourage or discourage, reveal truth or spread confusion. How often have I spoken before praying?

When God called Moses, Moses doubted his ability to speak. God’s response was reassuring: “Now go! I will be with you as you speak, and I will instruct you in what to say.” (Exodus 4:12, NLT)

Jesus gave a similar promise to His disciples: “For the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what needs to be said.” (Luke 12:12, NLT)

This part of the prayer reminds me that my words should not simply reflect my own wisdom or emotions. I want my speech to be guided by the Holy Spirit so that my conversations bring life, truth, encouragement, and grace.

Fill My Heart with Your Love

Everything begins and ends here.

If my heart is not filled with God’s love, my thoughts can become cold and my words can become harsh. But when His love fills my heart, everything else flows from that source.

One verse seems almost to echo this prayer directly: “…God has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.” (Romans 5:5, NLT)

Paul expands this beautiful truth in his prayer for the Ephesian believers: “…may you have the power to understand… how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is… Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.” (Ephesians 3:17–19, NLT)

God’s love is not merely something we receive once. It is something we continually live in and overflow with toward others.

A Simple Prayer for Every Day

What strikes me most is the order of this prayer.

Mind. Mouth. Heart.

The Lord begins by shaping how I think. From renewed thinking come words that honor Him. And underneath it all is a heart continually being filled with His love.

I don’t know why this prayer came to me in the middle of the night. I simply know it has become my prayer each morning since.

Perhaps its simplicity is its beauty.

Lord, today…

Fill my mind with Your thoughts.

Fill my mouth with Your words.

Fill my heart with Your love.
