Learning to Keep Knocking

Lately, God has been teaching me something uncomfortable but deeply necessary: how to stay persistent in prayer even when I don’t see immediate answers.

If I’m honest, I thought mature prayer meant asking once, trusting God, and quietly moving on. But this season of my life has exposed how quickly discouragement can creep in when prayers seem delayed.

And then I found myself sitting with Luke 11:5–10.

Jesus tells a story about a man knocking on his friend’s door at midnight asking for bread because he has an unexpected guest to care for. The friend initially refuses. The house is asleep. The timing is inconvenient. Everything about the situation says, “Come back later.”

But the man keeps knocking.

And Jesus says the door eventually opens because of his shameless persistence.

That phrase hit me hard. Shameless persistence. Not polished prayers. Not perfect words. Not pretending to have it all together.

Just relentless faith that keeps knocking.

This season has stretched me in ways I didn’t expect. There have been prayers I thought would be answered quickly that are still sitting in the silence. There have been moments where I’ve wrestled with disappointment, uncertainty, and even the temptation to stop asking altogether.

But I’m beginning to realize something beautiful: persistence in prayer is not about convincing God to care. It’s about refusing to disconnect from Him while I wait.

Jesus wasn’t painting a picture of an irritated God who reluctantly responds to desperate people. He was revealing the heart posture of people who trust God enough to keep coming back.

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” — Luke 11:9

I love that Jesus uses active language:

Ask.

Seek.

Knock.

Not once.

Continually.

There’s movement in it. Hunger in it. Expectation in it.

And honestly, I think God has been trying to grow boldness in me more than comfort.

Because bold prayers require vulnerability. They require honesty. They require risking disappointment and choosing to trust anyway. Persistent prayer means standing in the tension between what God promised and what I currently see.

That tension can either harden your heart or deepen your dependence on God.

I feel Him teaching me not to interpret delay as absence.

Some prayers are changing circumstances.

Others are changing me.

Sometimes I think the greatest miracle isn’t the answer itself, but the transformation that happens while I keep knocking. The way prayer softens pride. The way waiting exposes fear. The way persistence builds intimacy with God that quick answers never could.

I’m also learning that boldness in prayer is deeply connected to my true identity… “Bold Freedom Fighter”.

Children don’t hesitate to ask their father for what they need.

Friends aren’t afraid to knock on the door.

Love creates access.

For too long, I approached prayer cautiously — almost apologetically. But Jesus is teaching me that faith doesn’t shrink back. Faith approaches boldly, not because we are entitled, but because we are invited.

So in this season, I’m learning to pray again with expectancy.

To keep knocking.

To keep seeking.

To keep asking.

Even when the timing feels late.

Even when the answer hasn’t arrived yet.

Even when silence tempts me to quit.

Because maybe persistence is not proof that God isn’t listening.

Maybe persistence is part of how He teaches us to trust Him more deeply.

And maybe some doors only open for people willing to keep knocking.
