Prepared and Ready

The other day, I found myself watching Donna do what she does so well.

We were getting ready to have friends over for dinner, and while I was thinking mostly about the meal, she was thinking about the experience. She carefully chose the decorations, arranged the centerpiece, placed the candles just right, and set each place at the table with intention. Every detail mattered to her because every guest mattered to her.

Long before anyone rang the doorbell, everything was prepared and ready.

As I watched her moving from one small task to another, the Lord brought to mind a passage from Mark 14.

As Jesus and His disciples approached the Passover, He sent two of them into the city with unusual instructions. They would find a man who would lead them to a house. There they were to tell the owner, “The Teacher asks: Where is My guest room, where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?” Jesus then said, “He will show you a large upper room, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.”

These words caught my attention today...

“Furnished and ready.”

Scripture doesn’t tell us much about the homeowner. We aren’t told how long the room had been prepared or what he knew about what was about to happen there. We simply know that when Jesus needed a place, there was one waiting.

Ready.

That ordinary room would become the place where Jesus shared His last meal with His disciples before the cross. It was there He broke the bread, shared the cup, and spoke words that would echo through history.

The owner probably had no idea how significant his simple act of preparation would become.

And that made me wonder…

How often does God simply look for people who are prepared?

Not people who have everything figured out.

Not people who know every detail of His plan.

Just people whose hearts are ready when He calls.

Watching Donna prepare our home reminded me that preparation is an act of love. She doesn’t wait until our guests pull into the driveway before setting the table.

She prepares because she expects them. She makes room because she values their presence.

Isn’t that what the Lord asks of us?

To make room for Him.

To live with hearts that are already prepared.

I’ve realized that discipleship is often much less dramatic than I imagine. Most days it looks like quietly making myself available to God.

Keeping my heart ready.

Keeping my gifts available.

Being willing to let God use whatever He has entrusted to me.

Sometimes that’s opening my home.

Sometimes it’s offering encouragement to someone who needs hope.

Sometimes it’s writing words that I pray God will use to strengthen another believer.

Sometimes it’s simply saying, “Lord, whatever You want to do today, I’m available.”

I’ve spent enough years walking with Christ to know that His interruptions are rarely interruptions at all. They are invitations. The question is whether I’ll be prepared when they come.

The homeowner in Mark 14 reminds me that God often accomplishes extraordinary things through people who faithfully prepare for ordinary opportunities.

I don’t know what the Lord may ask of me tomorrow.

I don’t know who He may place in my path.

I don’t know what conversation, opportunity, or assignment He has already planned.

But I do know how I want Him to find me.

Prepared and ready.

Not because I know what’s coming.

But because I know the One who is.

Lord, prepare my heart before You ever call my name. Keep me close enough to hear Your voice, humble enough to follow Your leading, and willing to place everything You’ve entrusted to me at Your disposal. May my life always have room for You and for whatever You desire to accomplish through me.
