Why Are We Here?

There’s a moment in Acts 19:32–34 that feels surprisingly familiar to real life. The Bible says the crowd in Ephesus was in complete confusion. Some people were shouting one thing, others were shouting something else, and most of the people there didn’t even know why they were there.

That line always catches my attention: most of them didn’t know why they had come together.

Have you ever been somewhere and suddenly realized you had no idea what was going on?

I had a moment like that once while camping with my in-laws.

We were all camping together, which already meant there were a lot of people around, a lot of noise, and not much privacy. At one point I needed to go into the bathroom area to take a shower.

Everything looked the same. Towels hanging everywhere. I threw my towel on the counter, turned around to realize something was missing… No urinals…

I realized something embarrassing.. I was in the woman’s bathroom.

Not thinking too clearly I ran out the door to check the sign on the door only to realize I had left my towel on the counter. I ran back inside, grabbed my towel and ran out the door. Then I realized I had grabbed the wrong towel.

I quickly ran back inside , threw the towel I picked up by mistake back on the counter, grabbed my towel and ran back out the door.

After getting back to the campsite, my mother-in-law soon returned from the bathroom, very perturbed. When my father-in-law asked her why she was so upset she said, “somebody borrowed my towel in the bathroom and didn’t even have the decency to put it back where they found it“

I had grabbed my mother-in-law’s towel by mistake.

I told her it was me…

It was a small, funny moment, but it reminded me of something important. Sometimes we move quickly, assuming we know what we’re doing, when in reality we might not fully understand the situation at all.

That’s exactly what was happening in Acts 19.

The city of Ephesus had erupted into chaos because the message of Jesus was changing people’s lives. A huge crowd gathered in the theater, voices shouting and emotions running high.

But Scripture tells us something almost ironic:

Most of them didn’t even know why they were there.

They were caught up in the moment. Following the noise. Following other people. Reacting without understanding.

And if we’re honest, life can sometimes feel like that.

People run from one responsibility to another. Work, schedules, goals, problems, plans. The world is loud and busy, and sometimes we find ourselves moving along with the crowd without stopping to ask the deeper question:

Why am I here?

Unlike that confused crowd, our lives are not random.

God intentionally placed each of us on this earth. Our lives are not accidents, and our presence in this world has meaning far beyond daily routines.

We are here because God created us with purpose.

We are here to:

  • know Him

  • grow in relationship with Him

  • reflect His character to others

  • and point people toward Christ

When we forget that, life can start to feel like that crowd in Ephesus—busy, noisy, and confusing.

But when we remember it, everything begins to make sense.

Sometimes the most important thing we can do is pause and ask ourselves the same question that the people in that theater never asked:

“Why am I here?”

Not just where am I going today?

Not just what do I need to accomplish this week?

But deeper than that.

Why has God placed me on this earth?

Why has He placed me in this family, this community, this moment in time?

When we begin asking that question sincerely, we start seeing life differently. We start recognizing opportunities to love people, encourage someone who is hurting, share hope, and live in a way that reflects God.

That camping moment with the towel was just a small mistake, but it reminds me how easy it is to grab the wrong thing when we’re not paying attention.

Life can be like that too.

If we simply follow the noise of the world, we might spend years chasing things that don’t truly matter.

But when we stop and ask God why we’re here, He brings clarity to the confusion.

Instead of living like the crowd in Acts 19—shouting without understanding—we begin to live with purpose.

Because the answer to that question is simple but powerful:

We are here because God placed us here.

And He placed us here to know Him, serve Him, and help others find Him too.

Acts 17:26. (AMP).

And He made from one [common origin, one source, one blood] all nations of men to settle on the face of the earth, having definitely determined [their] allotted periods of time and the fixed boundaries of their habitation (their settlements, lands, and abodes),

So that they should seek God, in the hope that they might feel after Him and find Him, although He is not far from each one of us.
